A patchwork aesthetic

Pattern mixing is truly a joyful art.

Growing up, I learned that an outfit should only have one print – or maybe two, if one was small enough to blend into a “solid” from a distance. Keep it simple, and leave the mixing up to the professionals… Well, I have loved seeing this exciting new trend develop of people creating bold print combinations for themselves.

Whether with “busy” patchwork pieces or mixed separates, designers, stylists and other bloggers have been daring to mix it up. And, with a little carefree abandon, its producing a lot of wonderful eye candy.

Through the desert

Mojave
{ Mojave Desert between LA and Las Vegas }

The weekend before last, Matthew and I drove out to Las Vegas for the weekend as a sort of bonding trip with a lot of his co-workers. (I would have written about this sooner, but I was a little preoccupied with recovering from my cold.) While I’ve found Las Vegas to be a thrilling sight to see – a sort of theme park for adults, I like to say – I’m more visually interested in the great expanse surrounding it. There is so much inspiration to be found there, in the colors of the sand, rock, brush and sky, in the cultural history of all desert peoples, and even in the deep shadows and metallic reflections under the glaring sun.

Mojave

Both in very subtle and obvious ways, native desert cultures, along with many other “tribal” influences, have been very present in this summer’s fashions. You can see their influence in the woven textiles, geometric prints and graphics, and other techniques and silhouettes traditional to those peoples.

Hawaiian style

my grandparents, Pat and Ray

Matthew and I have been throwing around honeymoon destination ideas for a while now – it really feels like the whole world is open to us – but we’ve finally decided that we’re going to Hawaii! So, I’m a little infatuated at the moment with this place I’ve never been to but have heard so much about. Funnily enough, we both actually have strong family ties to this island paradise. While Matthew has family living there now, my grandparents lived there early on in their marriage in the 1950s – and my Uncle Tim was even born there.

For my grandparents’ 40th Wedding Anniversary in 1991, my parents helped send my grandparents back to Hawaii for a vacation. When they returned, they brought back a set of dresses made in Hawaii for my sister and me. Above, you can see my niece is now wearing the red one I wore as a little girl.

Lately, iconic Hawaiian prints have made a serious comeback in the fashion world. During the Great Depression, Ellery Chun popularized the now-iconic, short-sleeve, button-up Hawaiian shirt by becoming its first mass producer. Using leftover Japanese kimono fabric, these bold Hawaiian or “Aloha” shirts showcased colorful designs with florals, palm fronds, hula girls, pineapples and other images of Polynesia. The Aloha shirt has evolved from there and inspired all different kinds of designers and clothing.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces I have found within this tradition – some a little bit vintage, others very modern, but all with the “Aloha” spirit:

Pajamas and the sniffles

Make yourself happy
{ Make yourself happy }

As you might have read in my last entry, I came down with some sort of cold or flu over our rambunctious weekend in Las Vegas. With planning an impending wedding and trying to find a job, I really didn’t feel like I had time to be “indulgent” and check out for week. But, I’m already almost back to normal (as of Wednesday afternoon) because I let my body take the time, treatment and rest it needed.

A nice place to recuperate
{ A nice place to recuperate }

One of the first things I try to remember when I get sick is that positive mood boosts your immune system. I spent my time curled up in nice places, like our chaise lounge and our bed. Then, I surrounded myself with things that lift my spirits, like a bouquet of yellow tulips, warm bubble baths, cold showers (just me?), a good book, soft tissues, a lavender-scented candle, a cozy blanket – and, definitely, my laptop and TV.

I normally blog about what I wear (or want to wear) going out, but I like to feel good about what I wear at home, too – especially when I’m stuck there. I’m wearing a ruffle-sleeve tee I snagged from Urban Outfitters with my favorite leg warmers by American Apparel. I’ve also switched out my contact lenses for my glasses – a good way to avoid annoying complications that often come along with sinus infections, like dry eyes or conjunctivitis.

Here are some of my most-coveted looks for lounging around and recuperating in my apartment:

Unfortunately, once you have a cold or flu, the most you can do is just make yourself as comfortable as possible until it passes. You can try to prevent the flu with seasonal flu shots or speed up the process with proper nutrition and rest, but you can’t take a quick cure for it.

Fluids
{ Keep yourself hydrated }

I drink lots (and lots) of water, hot green tea (with a little honey for my throat), Gatorade (for the electrolytes), and just a little Diet Dr. Pepper (for the happiness).

{ Make yourself comfortable }

My doctors in the past have recommended taking Mucinex D and Tylenol, which do a pretty good job suppressing most of my symptoms. I also like to eat Halls Defense Vitamin C Drops to supplement my diet and soothe my throat (plus, they’re very tasty). And, in my opinion, a little Strawberry ChapStick never hurts.

Even though this all makes me feel a lot better, the most important thing is to try to be at rest as much as possible. I just break up the monotony of sleeping, laying down and then sleeping again with short walks, stretching, and a little blogging. I wish you all good health – may you not need most of this advice!
