A place for inspiration

A big part of why I love to travel is that fashion inspiration often comes from the places you go – their architecture, their history, their culture and their people. Finally, I’m getting around to showing y’all my favorite part of our recent New York City trip – aesthetically, anyway. We did our own sort of architectural, walking tour of several major districts of Manhattan: The Financial District, Midtown, East Village, the Upper East Side – but I absolutely could not put my camera away in the Upper West Side.

Everything from the original storefronts to the well-aged brownstones to the fashionable streetwear caught my eye. To me, the woman above really captured the character of the Upper West Side with her look. There’s a modern, casual elegance to wearing a well-tailored dress with wind-blown, natural hair. At the same time, there’s reminiscence, sweetness and romance in her light grey lace, high-waisted, a-line skirt.

There are so many ways to bring the architectural beauty and creative culture of the Upper West Side into a look. Channel the youthful spirit of its artistic community, draw texture and pattern from its architecture, and pull from the charming color palette created by the off-whites, pale greys, and rose tones of the buildings.

A vintage romance

Vintage Metal Green Suitcase from Fossil Finds

As of today, our wedding day is 9 weeks and 4 days away! With the date coming up so soon, I’ve been doing a lot of wedding planning in the past couple of weeks – ordering invitations, booking musicians, planning our ceremony, and fantasizing about our honeymoon (a valid part of the planning process). Oh, if only I could take this suitcase with me…

We’re creating an artsy-nerdy theme to reflect us as individuals and a couple, with a subtly vintage romantic aesthetic. I’m in love with these vintage books I’ve collected to decorate the reception: Friends at Thrush Green by Miss Read, The Most Wanted by Jacquelyn Mitchard, The Making of The African Queen by Katharine Hepburn, Dreams are Not Enough by Jacqueline Briskin, and A Study in Scarlett by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Whether you incorporate them into a wedding or a wardrobe, vintage pieces bring their own unique whimsy to a modern aesthetic. Here are a few of my current favorite vintage and vintage-inspired clothes and accessories:

I bought this skirt a little over a month ago from the Zara store on Third Street Promenade after it caught my eye online. (Even though I find most of my clothes through online shopping, I always recommend trying to track down an item in person to make sure you like the real thing.) It combines two of my favorite current trends – the high-low hemline and pleated skirt – in a flattering way that will never go out of style. Both of these elements create a lot of beautiful movement in the skirt when I walk, showcasing its elegant shape.

Last week, I showed you how I like to wear it with a loose t-shirt and belt, but I also love it with a fitted tank top and scarf.

Playing with asymmetrical hemlines, cut-outs and sheer illusion skirts is a very classy and dramatic way to show-off a little more skin without feeling too exposed. They can also be perfect for showcasing calf- or knee-high boots, a serious staple in my wardrobe.

Everyday Americana

Upper Manhattan
{ Upper Manhattan }

We really lucked out with a beautiful Saturday for our recent trip to New York, despite the grim forecast. It wasn’t until late that night, when we were headed back to the hotel, that the first raindrops began to fall after long day of crowded streets and sunshine.

After our outdoor brunch on Stone Street, we took the subway to Upper Manhattan. We walked around Central Park, eating Levain Bakery cookies—these thick lumps of freshly baked goodness that make you understand why the French call “cookies” biscuits. (Try the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip or the Chocolate Chip Walnut if you get the chance!)

We strolled through the shops on the Upper East Side, admiring all the things I can’t buy but I’d like to add to my Vicarious Purchases Pinterest board, then went to dinner in the East Village at Brick Lane Curry House.

After visiting New York City—the iconic center of America—I’m in the mood to celebrate the recent Americana trend I’ve seen on the streets of NYC and LA. Maybe I’m a little ahead of schedule, with the Fourth of July still a month away, but these American flag graphics and red white + blue’s don’t have to be reserved for special occasions.

Good friends in new places

A little over a month ago, Matthew suddenly asked me if I wanted to go to New York with him for a weekend. This would not be a business trip or a holiday – just the two of us running off to see some good, old friends in one of the greatest cities in the world. So this past weekend, we stayed in a hotel on Wall Street, roamed the streets of NYC, and reconnected with a few college friends.

Today, I’m starting with my photos from the Financial District, where we stayed at the Andaz Hotel on Wall Street, a few short blocks from the New York Stock Exchange. We got in a quick photoshoot on a small road near our hotel the evening we arrived before a quick glass of wine at the hotel, dinner on Gold Street, and taking the subway to Grand Central Station and Times Square with our friend Ben.

The next morning, we had brunch with Ben and Brian at Ulysses Folk House on Stone Street, an alleyway lined with restaurants and filled with picnic tables. (The guys went a little healthier, but Matthew and I both ordered the [amazing] Bourbon French Toast.)

Before Saturday, I’d only ever seen places like this in quaint, dreamy photos of European alleys. It was a great start to a day that took us to Battery Park, the Upper West Side, the Upper East Side, and Midtown East… more photos of the rest of NYC to come.
