The weekend before last, Matthew and I drove out to Las Vegas for the weekend as a sort of bonding trip with a lot of his co-workers. (I would have written about this sooner, but I was a little preoccupied with recovering from my cold.) While I’ve found Las Vegas to be a thrilling sight to see – a sort of theme park for adults, I like to say – I’m more visually interested in the great expanse surrounding it. There is so much inspiration to be found there, in the colors of the sand, rock, brush and sky, in the cultural history of all desert peoples, and even in the deep shadows and metallic reflections under the glaring sun.
Both in very subtle and obvious ways, native desert cultures, along with many other “tribal” influences, have been very present in this summer’s fashions. You can see their influence in the woven textiles, geometric prints and graphics, and other techniques and silhouettes traditional to those peoples.
